Ice Swimming

One day recently I thought it would be cooler in the carport since it was in the shade to put Noah in his little pool for a while. It is so warm here that the water out of the faucet outside is not even cool, it's just luke warm. So I dumped all the ice out of the ice bucket in the pool to cool them off. Noah wanted to play catch the ice. He is getting too fast and too grown for me. Here he is pulling up on the side of the pool. Just a few minutes later he dove face first out of the pool onto the concrete. So much for being in the shade. Grass makes a much softer landing.

Guatemala - Part 2

God really challenged me with this trip to Guatemala. At first I didn't want to go. I could not imagine leaving my two boys, Noah just barely being one, for a whole week. But through his Word and through friends God created in my heart a desire to go. He showed me to whom much is given, much is required. My boys are so very blessed to have family and friends all around them who love on them and share the love of Jesus with them everyday. The children in the mountains of Guatemala may never have any one come and share the love of Jesus with them. If they do, not very often. I have been very blessed to have many share the love of Jesus with me. I am to do likewise.

I had a wonderful time in Guatemala. The people and the environment are beautiful. There were so many things I did love about the trip. But as we went one from one village to the next each day it was challenging to continually share the gospel using the salvation bracelets again and again to child after child. God stretched me in many ways. As we shared the gospel with hundreds in Guatemala, God hit me with, "How many are you sharing the gospel with at home?" There was also much discussion about discipleship during our trip. God revealed to me again, to whom much is given, much is required. I have been so blessed to have many women invest in me and spend time discipling me. I have intentionally discipled only one young lady since we moved to Eufaula. Granted there are life changes and we have children now and more responsibilities now, but God has begun to burden my heart to do more, to give back more. As I was sitting in our share time one night thinking through this one fairly young Christian, who happened to be my roommate, said "I need to be discipled." Sometimes God just has to spell it out plain for us.

God is so good and through this trip I was also reminded how blessed I am and how blessed we all are in America. Thank you again to all who invested financially and prayerfully. Couldn't have done it without you. Love you all.

Guatemala - Part One

I am just now writing about my time in Guatemala because it’s hard to put into words everything I saw and experienced. A few fun or strange things about Guatemala -

They don’t use washcloths in Guatemala. They do sell them at their Walmart but they don’t typically use them and they are not offered in hotels.

All stores and restaurants come with armed security guards. Men holding rifles who look pretty intimidating. I don’t think near as many people would be stealing in America if those guards were everywhere here. On the first day we went to Walmart I paid for my things with Trista and as we were walking out our group leader, Bill asked us to find the rest of the group in the store and tell them it was time to go. I took off looking for them, not realizing I still had my cold “Pepsi Light” in my hand that I just paid for. A few minutes later when we found everyone and I tried to leave they would not let me out of the store with that soda in my hand. We tried to explain that I had already paid for it and Trista took the rest of the stuff with the receipt to the van but it didn’t work. I would either have to pay for it again or leave it. I left it. There is also an entrance and exit gate/ticket booth with a guard at Walmart.

They sell these awesome Oreo Wafer cookies at their Walmart that are not sold in America which makes me sad. We thought they were just a new product. No, they are not anywhere in America. Also all the cookies come in snack packs. You open a pack of oreos or any cookies and they are in individual 6 packs. Guess it keeps them fresher longer.

We were told not to drink the water because it has bacteria and stuff in it that will make Americans have the worst stomach virus ever. I drank lots of “Pepsi and Coca Cola Light” (Their Diet Coke) and we could not eat any fruits or vegetables that had not been cooked or you didn’t peel the skin off. I also learned to brush my teeth with bottled water. I made it to Friday before I had to throw away my toothbrush because I accidently stuck it under the faucet and rinsed it.

They don’t have Dr. Pepper or a lot of other choices. Basically you get Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite or Orange soda.

In Guatemala City they have McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Burger King and El Campero which is similar to our KFC.

The Mexican food we ate there was blah. Old Mexico here is better.

We did try one new food which was actually an El Salvador specialty, pupusa which was really good. No one offered me any roasted guinea pig as I was told they would do.

I didn’t try the Guatemalan chocolate. Theresa did and she said it was kind of bitter, not as sweet as ours.

We got to try our hand at bartering for goods on Friday when we went shopping in Antigua. At first I was shy about it but then it got easier as the day went on. We think we got pretty good deals but who knows, they were probably still laughing at us “gringos” when we left.

I took 3 years of Spanish in high school and one quarter in college, but still cannot actually speak Spanish. I was surprised at the number of words that came back to me though and now I want to “relearn” Spanish enough to actually speak it. I have a much greater respect for translators now as it made my brain tired continually trying to read the road signs and advertisements we rode by everyday and remember what the words mean.

The weather is great there – about 70 all the time we were there.

Even in the poorest of places there were still cell phones – same as in America.

Guatemalan women nurse their babies anytime, anywhere and it is a long time before they wean them. I saw a woman who was sitting and nursing a small child put him down on the floor and he stood up and reached right up and pulled her wrap back and went right back to nursing. The women also did not understand how Trista and I could leave our babies in America, because if we were in Guatemala how were they nursing? They did know what a bottle was and laughed when we told them. These are the women who live up in the mountains, not in Guatemala City. In Guatemala City is Walmart and the baby section looks a lot like ours.

Guatemala driving is pretty wild. No need for turn signals. Don’t know why they even put them in the cars when they build them. Just honk and angle your car in the lane you want and move on over. You have to be super intent watching for other cars because they are constantly coming over on you. Motorcycles are also allowed to weave in and out of traffic, wherever they feel there is room to get through. Scary for the rest of us. Very few stop signs or traffic lights as well.

There are many more stories and things I keep remembering at random times. Overall I feel very blessed to have been able to experience life in Guatemala. Spiritually I have much to share as well, it’s just hard to put in to words. I’m working on it so stay tuned…

My Day with Nathan

Just because I didn’t take a picture doesn’t mean that it wasn’t fun. Normally I only blog about things that I have a photographic record of, but today I had fun with Nathan and wanted to share.

He and I went to the doctor for a check-up on the tubes in his ear. The doctor visit took less than 20 minutes so we had the rest of the day to play around in Auburn and Opelika.

We went to a couple of bookstores and looked for a solar system model in Hobby Lobby. We ate at Red Lobster and Chick-Fil-A (not in that order) and we even took a driving tour around Auburn.

There really aren’t stories to tell. He didn’t do anything remarkably cute (other than just be Nathan) but it was a fun day to hang out together, and I wanted to remember it.

Mommy's Home!

We made it home safe and sound. Here are the boys in their new Guatemala soccer jerseys (that were made in the USA by the way) and me in my Guatemalan skirt. Thanks for all your support and prayers. Thanks especially to Brenda for making the trip and helping Shane with the boys this week. You are wonderful! I will be posting about my trip soon.

Nana’s Here and Meredith is Leaving

Meredith is heading to Guatemala for her mission trip in the morning. They are actually leaving at 2:45. I still haven’t decided if I am going to get up and give her a send off yet or not. But Brenda came to hang out with me while she was gone. I am pretty excited, but nothing compared to as excited as Nathan is to have Nana here. He just about jumped out of his skin when he realized that we would have 4 people to play Mario Party and that we wouldn’t have to play with a computer player. Too bad Meredith is leaving tomorrow and we will be back down to unless Noah suddenly learns how to play.

Since it will be Meredith’s birthday on Monday we went out and celebrated at Willie T’s tonight and had cupcakes when we got back home. Meredith also go the aforementioned “Mario Party” as her present.

Noah's First Birthday

Noah's birthday was Friday so we got up and sang "Happy Birthday" and let him open a few presents. I hope he likes the toy keys. He tries to grab mine from my hand every time he sees them and chew on them. We had a normal day of Mrs. Lindsey's and play, then we went to eat dinner at the BBQ restaurant. They serve little cornbread pones and last time Noah cried when we were all done. The piece that was left he carried with him to the van and continued to eat on in the van. This time it was just okay to him. After that we went out to the Lakepoint Lodge playground and the boys had a big time. Noah got to ride in his big red car and he loved the playground. He's not so much for the swings but he loved the slide and the tunnel.

Noah at age 1 is still crawling around, drinking his bottle and eating baby food. Taking his time transitioning to little boy. But he is adorable and we could just eat him up! He is still a happy boy, smiling all the time, grinning from ear to ear with those four little front teeth. He loves his "Ma Ma" and "Da Da" and "Nat an". He lights up and starts jumping and babbling when any of us walk into the room. He goes for a check up next week and I'll add those stats. We love you Noah! Happy Birthday!
Check up Tuesday, July 13 - 22 lbs!

Slip N Slide #1

This is a short video made with the picture camera. We did a video with the digital video camera the next time that Shane will put up later.

Yancey Week in Review

Seems like there is always some laughable wildness going on at the Yancey house. Here's a few things from this week:

The boys were given a surprise from sweet Patti - their first slip n slide.

I took Noah out to watch for a few minutes intending to take him in soon for bed. He wanted down in that water. He loved it and his clothes and diaper were soaked in minutes so Shane just stripped him down and let him have at it. He cried and cried when I did take him in. First time I've ever seen him be so upset about something being taken away.
Monday night Nathan was invited to "Carnival Night at Parkview" There were corn dogs and animal crackers and lots of games and prizes.

One night Bob and Larry made an appearance at our house. Our neighbor gives us fresh vegetables from the garden and in this batch was the biggest cucumber we'd ever seen. So we borrowed a few parts from Mr. Potato head and made it into a Larry.
Shane is so ready for Noah to be wearing shoes. None of the sandals we have will stay on his feet, so a determined Shane put him in socks and tennis shoes. Didn't last long. Noah was pitiful crawling around dragging them behind him.
Nathan loves Mario but he and Mommy aren't so great at playing Mario Kart so we rented Mario Party 8 for the Wii and had lots of fun playing it for days.

Last Saturday we tried out one of Shane's Father's Day gifts - homemade corn dog mix. They were yummy, but it was a lot of work. Guess it will be a special occasion kind of thing!

Noah is 1

Today is Noah's first birthday and we didn't have a battery charger for either camera. So we had a party with the video camera and I guess I can pull together stills for a post in the future, but I keep thinking about how poor Noah will wonder why we have so many more pictures of Nathan.
